Hobbyists
new to collecting and keeping alterna are usually attracted to the
eastern forms initially. It is easy to fall under the
spell of the variable yet relatively clean, orderly
color and pattern coordinates found in alterna populations
east of the Big Bend area. Once some experience is
gained with these eastern animals many alterna hobbyists
begin to develop a wandering eye and a curiosity about
the topsy-turvy and somewhat intimidating world of the
western alterna
populations. Curiosity leads to investigation and it is
usually at about this point that the epiphany comes.
What was initially viewed as western alterna pandemonium
transforms into an ever increasing sense of awe for an
animal who has part of its evolutionary history recorded
in mysterious, ornamental designs upon its back. A new
appreciation for line, form and color develops and
suddenly the world becomes a much larger place. This is
the way that most of us stumble along and eventually
find our way to the River Road.
