River Road Alterna - Circa 1985
Adult from the early days. A River Road pattern at its simplest. Most
and perhaps all of the alterna localities across the state of Texas
contain individual specimens whose pattern morphology fits the bill of
"from anywhere and everywhere" in a locality sense. Even after seeing
and working with hundreds of alterna from various localities, I could
not definitively pigeonhole this animal. Juno Road, Langtry,
Sanderson, Black Gap, and of course the River Road are a few of the
localities that could have easily produced this snake. From an
evolutionary point of view it makes one wonder if there is not a base
morphology or common pattern ancestor to the pandemonium of patterns
that have developed within the various localities. This snake would
surely be a contender for such an animal.
