It took
several years and was surprisingly difficult to
put together our breeding group of wild type
Brooks Kingsnakes with provenance. Kingsnakes in
Florida are currently under heavy siege from
ever increasing human activities and they have
been completely extirpated from large sections
of the state. Brooks Kingsnakes are likewise
suffering and have become difficult to locate in
the wild with wild snakes sometimes suffering
from mysterious neurological and physiological
pathologies ostensibly related to the widespread
use of pesticides/herbicides. Even under the
best of scenarios, rising tidal waters indicate
that this race of kingsnakes could be extirpated
before 2050. I have personally found that the
normal, wild type Brook's coloration is an
exceptionally beautiful animal without involving
any morphing or hybridizing procedures. There is
some mild sexual dimorphism with this kingsnake
- male patterns tend to fade a bit more with
age. The second male has "super fading," meaning
that the dark areas of the snake are not only
reducing in size but also losing pigment, making
the snake ghostly or "faded" in appearance.
These getula are the Teddy bears of the getula
clan - once they realize you aren't on the menu
(and they figure this out surprising quickly for
a getula) they are very handle-able, curious
snakes.
